I see sound as an invaluable resource of information about environments, particularly when it stems from remote underwater environments, such as the Southern Ocean, where most of my work is focused. My current research uses acoustic data as a foundation for developing new concepts of evaluating underwater sound environments (soundscape planning, acoustic biodiversity assessments), but also for the investigation of marine mammal habitat usage. Much of my research is also searching to show and investigate the current impact on polar oceans of various anthropogenic pressures, such as the increasing footprint of Antarctic tourism as well as the consequences of sea ice anomalies on Antarctic ice breeding pinnipeds. To also communicate our science to various audiences, I have experienced art-science collaborations as very fruitful and inspiring.
